Beautiful Revolutionary shortlisted for ALS Gold Medal

We’re delighted that Laura Elizabeth Woollett’s Beautiful Revolutionary has been shortlisted for the Australian Literature Society (ALS) Gold Medal. The award is presented annually by the Association for the Study of Australian Literature to a ‘work of outstanding literary merit’ published in the previous year.

Beautiful Revolutionary was inspired by Jim Jones’s Peoples Temple and the events leading up to the 1978 Jonestown Massacre. Meticulously researched, elegantly written, and utterly engrossing, it explores the allure of the real-life charismatic leader who would destroy so many. Woollett painstakingly examines what happens when an idealistic young woman is pulled into Jones’s orbit — an orbit it would prove impossible for her to leave.
